Born in Karlsruhe in 1964, Stefan Wurz began his musical education by training as a classical pianist while at the same time teaching himself to play the guitar and drums. He has been playing in various rock, pop and blues bands for more than 20 years. In 1996, Stefan Wurz moved to Hildesheim.

Stefan Wurz started composing music at age twelve. Among his early works are a wide range of songs for his bands, incidental music for five productions of the Pforzheim cabaret companies Amnesie Irrational and McMeier and miscellaneous theatre productions in Pforzheim, at the Stuttgart Renitenztheater and the Nordhausen theatre as well as soundtracks for several films.

His musicological essay “KUNDRY, SALOME, LULU – Femmes fatales in Musical Theatre“ was published in 2000. Stefan Wurz is currently working as a pianist, arranger, producer, musical director and teacher for the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Konrad Wolf in Potsdam, the Stadttheater Hildesheim and a variety of international productions.

His greatest passion, however, is composing modern Music Theatre.

Rock musicals ALICE (1992, based on Lewis Carroll, libretto by Martin Doll) and SCHÖNE NEUE WELT (1994, based on Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, libretto by Roland Maier) were   produced and performed by the Bob'she'Bob Music Theatre Company, of which Stefan Wurz is a founding member. Both productions are among the most successful shows ever performed in Pforzheim theatres and have been released on CD.

Having received rave reviews from an expert audience at the 2002 musical competition “Works in Progress” in Hamburg, the splatter opera DA CAPO AL FINE (Libretto by Klemens J. Brysch) was finished in 2003.

ROCKQUIEM, a Rock Show based on Mozart's Requiem, was premiered in Prague on August 3rd, 2003, and has since been performed in Italy, Hungary and Norway with the composer participating as musical director and acclaimed solo pianist.

The romantic musical HELLE NÄCHTE (White Nights), based on the novella by Dostoevsky with a libretto by Martin Doll, saw its first release in Pforzheim on 13th July 2006 and was a smash hit with public and press alike.

Current WIPs include the Rock'n'Gamez Cross Opera THE VIRTUAL MIRROR (Libretto by Wolfgang Walk).

Stefan Wurz experiences music in the dynamic range created between “serious” classical and contemporary classical music and  “easy” music like jazz, rock and pop. His work combines a musicologist's knowledge of composition techniques both classical and modern with the spirit of rock music. The rock musical ALICE is built on bitonal chords while SCHÖNE NEUE WELT (BRAVE NEW WORLD) makes use of stern twelve tone rows.  DA CAPO AL FINE derives its thrills from bringing musical and opera face to face – or to put it another way: it's Opera's Revenge on The Phantom. By juxtaposing Mozart's masterpiece with tough rock riffs, ROCKQUIEM  painfully tackles the eternal questions of life and death in a contemporary context.
